Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem Dash fell to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 5-4 on Tuesday night in the first of a six-game series at Truist Stadium.

Dan Metzdorf took the hill for the Dash and was roughed up in the first inning after Johan Davis led off with a walk and was pushed to third on back-to-back singles by Nick Gonzales and Jared Triolo. With the bases loaded, Lolo Sanchez lofted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Davis for the first run of the game. Will Matthiessen followed with a three-run homer to left field to give Greensboro a 4-0 edge after half an inning.

Metzdorf tightened up after the first, lasting four innings, striking out six Greensboro batters to pace the Dash pitching staff.

The Dash answered timidly in the home first after Jagger Rusconi smoked a line drive into the right field corner for a triple. Rusconi was driven in on a sacrifice fly to left from Jose Rodriguez. All was quiet until the fifth inning when Lazaro Leal knocked his third homer of the year-a solo shot - to bring the Dash closer at 4-2.

The Hoppers tacked on another run in the seventh as Will Matthiessen reached on an error committed by Samir Dueñez and scored on a single by Andres Alvarez.

The Dash made a few runs at a comeback in the later innings. Gunnar Troutwine drew a four-pitch walk with one away in the seventh inning and was pushed to third on back-to-back singles from Lazaro Leal and Caberea Weaver. The inning was closed by two consecutive strikeouts by Austin Roberts.

Come the eighth, Luis Curbelo put the Dash within a run on his 17th homer of the year-a two-run blast to left center field. The scoring stopped there however, as closer Will Kobos struck out the side in the ninth and secured a 5-4 Greensboro victory.

Starter Grant Ford (7-2) nabbed the win for Greensboro, while Kobos collected his third save. Dan Metzdorf (3-4) took the loss for Winston-Salem.

The Dash look to tie the series in game two on Wednesday night with righty Kevin Folman toeing the rubber for his second start. Santiago Florez will take the mound for Greensboro. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage beginning at 6:45 on https://www.milb.com/winston-salem/team/broadcast-corner.
