Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Fueled by an early offensive barrage complemented by solid pitching, the Winston-Salem Dash took a 13-2 victory on Saturday against the Asheville Tourists.
Winston-Salem struck early with the bats to quickly unravel the Asheville pitching staff. Lenyn Sosa led off the road half of the first with a double and was brought home on a Yoelqui Cespedeshome run-the first of the season for Cespedes. After allowing a double to Alex Destino, Asheville starter Jose Alberto Riverawas relieved by Jonathan Sprinkle, who walked two batters to load the bases for the Dash. Destino came into score on a wild pitch and Tyler Osik reached home by the same circumstance. Sprinkle found a stride and held the Dash to four runs in the top of the first.
The Tourists faced Taylor Varnell, who posted one of his best starts of the season so far. Varnell lasted five innings allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out nine batters.
Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Lopez relieved Sprinkle in the third and was met with an offensive barrage from Winston-Salem in the fourth. Lopez plunked Yoelqui Cespedes with a pitch to juice the bags, after which Yolbert Sanchez singled into a fielding error to scoring both Gunnar Troutwine and Travis Moniot. Two consecutive ground balls then scored Cespedes and Sanchez, who were soon followed by Luis Curbelo on a single from Duke Ellis. The run parade ended with a two-run homer off the bat of Gunnar Troutwine, marking his first longball of the season for the Dash. At the end of the fourth frame, the Dash enjoyed a hefty 12-0 lead.
Asheville took a stab with the bats in the later innings, plating one run by a sacrifice fly in the seventh and one from a groundout in the eighth.
The Dash had the last word in during the ninth, as Lenyn Sosa doubled to score Travis Moniot and take the game by the score of 13-2. Taylor Varnell (4-2) earned his fourth win on the season, while Jose Alberto Rivera (0-1) took his first loss.
With the series at 3-2, Winston-Salem looks for a chance to split on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
