Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 8, 2011) - Nick Ciolli homered and fell a triple shy of the cycle as Winston-Salem won its third straight game against Lynchburg 7-4. Sunday afternoon's win at BB&T Ballpark extended the Dash winning streak to three and gave the team its first series victory since mid-April.
Both teams mirrored each other in the first inning, each scoring a run. Lynchburg (10-18) lead-off hitter Todd Cunningham walked to begin the ballgame. Cunningham later advanced to second and a fielder's choice, and to third on Jace Whitmer's single. With one out, Joey Terdoslavich hit a sac fly to plate the game's first run.
In the bottom of the same inning, Winston-Salem's lead-off hitter Daniel Wagner also walked. Jose Martinez singled him over, and the two moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. Jared Mitchell then struck out before Ian Gac grounded out to third, scoring Wagner to tie the game at one.
The Dash (12-18) took the lead in the next inning, when Nick Ciolli homered to left field. The long ball was Ciolli's second of the season, both coming at BB&T Ballpark and both flying to the opposite field.
The Hillcats responded in the fourth inning that started with the first two hitters reaching base. Terdoslavich led off with a single, and then scored on a triple by Joe Leonard. After L.V. Ware struck out, Braeden Schlehuber hit a sacrifice fly to put the Cats up 3-2.
The back-and-forth continued into the bottom of the inning, when the first two hitters reached for the Dash as well. Andy Wilkins and Kyle Shelton hit successive singles, and advanced a base on a softly-hit, bloop single by Ciolli to load the bases. Austin Yount then reached on a fielder's choice that retired Shelton on his way to third, but scored Wilkins to tie the game.
Lynchburg evened up the score in the fifth when Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg started the frame with a single. Dash starter Cameron Bayne then walked the next two hitters to load the bases. After retiring one batter, Bayne induced a fielder's choice from Terdoslavich to score Lynchburg's fourth run.
The Dash then scored four unanswered runs in the next three innings to take the advantage for good. Martinez led off the fifth with a single, and was held at first after the next two batters struck out. With two outs, Wilkins singled and then Shelton drove home both runs with a double.
Ciolli had his third hit of the ballgame in the sixth when he led off the inning with a double. He scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
In the seventh, Gac singled and moved over to second on Wilkins' sacrifice bunt. Gac advanced to third on Shelton's ground out, and scored on Luis Sierra's single to put the lead at 7-4.
Bayne (3-3) picked up his first win in his last four outings. He threw five innings and allowed four runs (all earned). He struck out six batters and had a stretch where he retired five of seven batters on strikes. Willie Kempf (2-2) was saddled with the loss after four innings where he allowed three runs (all earned). Taylor Thompson picked up his third save, tying him for the team lead.
