13-Inning Win Propels Keys to First Place
May 8, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning, Keys right fielder Bobby Stevens battled through a marathon 11-pitch at-bat to work a game-winning walk to inch Frederick to its sixth consecutive win and a share of first place in the North Division. The 3-2 victory came in front of an enthusiastic Mother's Day crowd of 3,931.
Keys pitching dominated throughout the series, allowing six runs in the four-game set to lead the way.
On Sunday afternoon, Frederick got a strong start from Oliver Drake, who allowed a run in six innings of work. Pitchers Will Startup, Justin Moore, Sean Gleason and Nick Haughian continued the outstanding work, allowing just one run in a combined seven innings of relief.
Tied at 2-2, the Keys threatened loading the bases with two men down in the bottom of the 12th inning. After getting out of the jam it would be Wilmington's turn.
The Blue Rocks loaded the bases with one man down in the top of the 13th inning. Haughian got a slow chopper to third base and the Keys got the force out at the plate. Next up was centerfielder Tim Ferguson who grounded into a force play to keep the game tied.
In the Keys half of the 13th, centerfielder Miguel Abreu lifted a double near the line in right field. Third baseman Dale Mollenhauer put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, moving Abreu to third base. After consecutive intentional walks, shortstop Garabez Rosa, who drove in the Keys first two runs of the game, struck out swinging.
That set the table for Stevens, who had his best pro day on Mothers Day two years ago in a 5-for-5, two home run game against the same Wilmington Blue Rocks. With the crowd chanting "Bobby," Stevens came through with the walk.
After an off day the Keys are right back at it taking to the road to face the Lynchburg Hillcats. The first of three games will begin at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, May 10th with RHP Bobby Bundy on the hill. The game can be heard on the home of the Keys, 1450 AM The Source.
Frederick returns home for Bark in the Park Night presented by Crossroads Animal Referral and Emergency Monday, May 16th at 7:00 p.m. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
