Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (May 8, 2011) - After three one-run losses, the Pelicans finally exacted some revenge, earning a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at LewisGale Field to salvage the finale of the four-game series. A trio of Myrtle Beach pitchers held Salem to just four singles and the Red Sox dropped just their eighth game of the 2011 season, falling to 20-8 overall heading into Monday's off-day and Tuesday's road-trip to Wilmington.
Jared Hoying went 3-5 with a pair of runs, while Michael Olt added two hits and a walk to pace the Pelican offense. Ole drove in Hoying in the top of the third to break a scoreless tie and give Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead, while the Pelicans added three more runs with a rally in the fifth to surge ahead 4-0. Myrtle Beach mustered baserunners in seven of the nine innings, twice stranding the bases loaded without scoring. Overall, the Pelicans left 10 on base, but scored more than they needed thanks to the effort from their pitching staff.
Lefthander Robbie Ross yielded just one run on four hits in six innings, improving to 4-1 on the season. Ross kept the Sox off balance, striking out six, and walking four. Salem did not score against the Pelicans southpaw until Kolbrin Vitek's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth plated Jeremy Hazelbaker, making it 4-1. Reynaldo Rodriguez followed Vitek's single with another base hit to bring the tying run to the plate, but Dan Butler struck out to end the threat.
The Sox only had one man reach base over the final three innings against the Myrtle Beach bullpen. Zach Osborn tossed two scoreless innings before Johan Yan arrived to save his third game of the season, striking out a pair in a perfect ninth.
Vitek and Rodriguez each went 2-4 for the Red Sox, but the rest of the Salem lineup went hitless in 22 at-bats. Miguel Gonzalez got tagged with the loss, despite allowing just one run in four innings. Will Latimer surrendered three in the fifth out of the Salem bullpen, while Anatanaer Batista tossed two scoreless and Kendal Volz held the Pelicans without a run in the ninth.
At 20-8, the Red Sox sit in first place in the Carolina League Southern Division, leading second-place Myrtle Beach by three games. Following an off-day on Monday, the Sox hit the road for a three-game series at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. Salem will start Pete Ruiz in the opener, while Wilmington will counter with Jake Odorizzi. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
