Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - Winston-Salem erupted for eight runs in the eighth inning to complete a shocking 9-8 comeback win against the Potomac Nationals on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Dash trailed 6-0 after six innings, took a 9-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth, and stranded the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth to capture the first game of the series.
Winston starter Nate Jones was not his sharpest in the early going, giving up two runs in the first inning on a single by Sean Rooney. The P-Nats (29-23, 60-62) added three more in the fourth on Sean Nicol's RBI triple and a two-run double by Tyler Moore. Potomac went ahead 6-0 in the sixth inning when Moore blasted his league-leading 26th home run of the season off Jeff Sues.
The Dash (26-25, 69-52) comeback started in the seventh inning. Drew Garcia hit an RBI single off Marcos Frias to get Winston on the scoreboard.
Greg Paiml and Kenny Williams, Jr. led off the eighth with singles, forcing Gary Cathcart to summon reliever A.J. Morris. After striking out Jose Martinez, Morris walked Jon Gilmore to load the bases. Seth Loman then hit a chopper to the second baseman. Gilmore was forced out at second, but Paiml scored on the fielder's choice.
The next six batters collected base hits for Winston-Salem. Ozzie Lewis hit an RBI single to make it 6-3. After Luis Sierra singled to re-load the bases, Garcia hit a two-run single to right, cutting Winston's deficit to a single run.
Jason Bour, playing near his hometown of Centreville, Virginia, stroked a single to right field to score two more and push the Dash into a 7-6 lead. Patrick McCoy entered the game for Potomac and gave up RBI singles to Paiml and Williams, extending Winston's lead to 9-6.
The Dash scored eight runs on eight hits in the inning. It tied for the most runs the team has scored in one frame all season and eclipsed the team's previous high in hits by one.
The P-Nats scored one run in the eighth and another in the ninth to cut Winston's lead to 9-8. Potomac had Nicol at second base representing the tying run with no outs, but Brandon Kloess got Derek Norris to pop out on a bunt, and then struck out Moore looking.
Hector Santiago then entered to face left-handed hitter Bill Rhinehart, who softly grounded back to the pitcher to end the ballgame. Santiago picked up his second save, preserving a win for Ryan Kussmaul (1-0), who won in his Dash debut.
Morris (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk in 0.2 innings.
It was the 14th time Winston-Salem has come back in the seventh inning or later to win a game this season, and the fifth time the team has done it against Potomac.
The series continues on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. when LHP Joe Serafin (1-3, 6.21) opposes RHP Adrian Alaniz (6-4, 2.44). The audio broadcast begins at 6:15 on www.wsdash.com.
