Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - It just is not Tim Melville's year. The sixth-ranked prospect in the Kansas City system, according to Baseball America, entered Friday's start with the second-most losses in the Carolina League. But the right-hander turned in one of his best starts of the season, allowing just one run in six innings pitched. Somehow it still was not good enough, as the Wilmington Blue Rocks (60-63, 28-25) fell to the Lynchburg Hillcats (53-68, 24-27), 7-0, at Frawley Stadium.

Melville retired nine of the first 10 men he faced and allowed only two runners beyond first base all night. Unfortunately for the Blue Crew, the 20-year-old's only true mistake of the evening cost him a run. Cody Puckett opened the fourth with a solo homer to left.

Melville finished his outing after the sixth, issuing only one free pass on the night. He yielded four hits and fanned three.

Ryan Dennick entered out of the bullpen in the seventh and promptly surrendered an insurance tally to the Hillcats. After retiring the first batter he faced, Dennick surrendered an infield single to second baseman Shane Carlson. The knock extended Carlson's hitting streak to 16 games and it allowed him to score when Josh Fellhauer followed with a smash to center. Fellhauer was thrown out trying to stretch his hit to a triple, but he had already extended Lynchburg's lead to a pair.

Dennick was victimized again in the eighth. He walked Neftali Soto with one away and then allowed an RBI double to Chris Richburg, which carried over the head of left fielder Adrian Ortiz. Another walk followed, this one to Kyle Day. That set up Carlson's run-scoring single to left to make it, 4-0, Lynchburg.

Puckett added a two-run double into the left-field corner with one out in the ninth against Rocks reliever James Thompson. Efrain Contreras capped the scoring with an RBI double of his own later in the frame.

Meanwhile, Wilmington's offense could do little. The Rocks managed only six hits as a team and had two men cut down running the bases. Ortiz was caught stealing in the third, while Nick Francis was picked off first in the seventh.

Wilmington put together only two true scoring chances. The Rocks put runners at the corners with two outs on a walk and an infield single in the second. But Adam Frost whiffed to retire the side. Frost keyed the other Wilmington opportunity. He singled and then stole second with two down in the fifth. The third baseman was stranded there though as Patrick Norris looked at a called third strike.

The Rocks will look to bounce back on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Bryan Paukovits (3-3, 5.36) takes the hill for Wilmington against Lynchburg right-hander Curtis Partch (5-9, 5.05).
