Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem Dash manager Joe McEwing and third baseman Brent Morel were recently honored as the Carolina League released its postseason honors and awards. McEwing, who in his first season as a manager, led Winston-Salem to a first-half title in the Southern Division with a 38-30 record and earned home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Morel was named an All-Star at third base, where he has been the cornerstone of the Dash offense and defense. A former third round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the 2008 draft, Morel is in just his second professional season. He is currently hitting .280 with 15 home runs, 72 RBI and 23 stolen bases. The California Polytechnic State University product has placed his name near the top of the league in numerous offensive categories including batting average (.280, 9th), (128 hits, 4th) and runs scored (79, 3rd). Morel also paces the league defensively at third base, where he currently sports a .970 fielding percentage and has committed only 10 errors in 331 total chances.

McEwing, a Bristol, Pa., native began his coaching career as the hitting coach for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights in 2008 after retiring from playing that January. Nicknamed "Super Joe", McEwing was a utility player who played every position on the field, except for pitcher and catcher, in his nine-year major league career. For his career, McEwing hit .251 with 25 home runs and 158 RBI in 754 games with four different clubs. He becomes the first Winston-Salem skipper to claim the manager-of-the-year honors since Chris Cron garnered the award in 1998.

The Dash is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the second half of the season and trying to win both halves in the same season for the first time since Joe Crede helped Winston-Salem accomplish the feat in 1998. The Dash concludes their regular season home schedule tonight at Wake Forest Baseball Park at 7 p.m. when they take on the Salem Red Sox.
