Salem Red Sox News Release
Winston-Salem, NC (September 3, 2009) - With the Southern Division playoff chase chugging along, both the Red Sox and Indians, tied for the final postseason berth as the day began, played simultaneous bonus baseball on Thursday night. When all was said and done, they remained all square, both losers of dramatic finishes on the road that kept things tied with four games remaining in the season.
Although Tim Federowicz provided ninth-inning heroics with a two-run blast to equal the score at five, Salem lacked similar punch in extras, and the evening finally ended when Winston-Salem catcher John Curtis laced a Chad Povich offering out of the park to give the Dash a 7-5, 11-inning triumph. The win moves the Dash one game ahead of both Salem and Kinston as Winston aims to win both halves of the 2009 season.
Salem starter Seth Garrison struggled, lasting just four innings as the Dash scored five quick runs off the Red Sox righthander. Garrison walked three and only struck out two, while allowing seven hits before he gave way to the bullpen in the fifth. Robert Coello and Jason Rice each threw three dominant, scoreless innings out of the pen to keep Salem in the ballgame. Coello allowed just two hits and struck out three, while Rice did not allow a hit in three masterful frames, whiffing four along the way.
Offensively, the Red Sox mustered a pair of runs off Winston's Dylan Axelrod in the top of the third and another in the fourth, but the Sox trailed 5-3 heading to the top of the ninth. With Santo Luis on to try to earn the save, he was immediately greeted by an Anthony Rizzo double. Following Brad Correll's strikeout, Federowicz belted a deep, game-tying dinger, his fourth homer of the season, and the score was tied at five. Although Salem had runners in base in both the 10th and the 11th, they were unable break the tie.
Povich entered in the bottom of the 11th, struck out the first batter he faced, but then yielded a double to Tyler Kuhn that immediately preceded the walk-off shot from Curtis, his first homer of the season.
While Winston concludes their season on the road at Myrtle Beach, the Red Sox begin a four-game, two-city, season-deciding series against Lynchburg. Salem plays Friday and Saturday at home before finishing their slate on Sunday and Monday on the road. Kinston, meanwhile, takes on Potomac for four at Pfitzner Stadium. The Sox-Cats series begins on Friday at 7:05 with Kyle Weiland set to duel with Bryan Morris.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Salem Red Sox baseball will be heard exclusively on www.salemsox.com and www.milb.com on Friday night due to another pigskin conflict. The Sox will return to their Flagship Station, NewsTalk 960 WFIR on Saturday evening.
