Dash Overpower Cyclones 6-1, Snap 7 Game Losing Streak

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Winston-Salem Dash defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones 6-1 Thursday night in game three of the series at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn. The win broke up a seven-game losing streak for the Dash.
Wilfred Veras kicked off the scoring in the top of the first, getting the Dash on the board with an RBI single to drive in Terrell Tatum. Veras, who has been a hitting machine this season, recorded his eighth straight outing with a hit and bumped his batting average up to .331.
In the bottom of the second, Brooklyn's Omar De Los Santos knotted things up with a solo shot to left field. The run would be the only damage of the day for Winston-Salem starter Kohl Simas, who delivered a gem on the mound.
Simas tossed five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out a whopping seven batters. With the Dash righty dealing, the offense was able to back him up and take the lead in the top of the third. Loidel Chapelli, who notched a hit for the first time in three games, knocked an RBI single to drive home Tatum.
After Simas coasted through another pair of innings, the Dash bats got back to work in the top of the fifth, scoring a trio of runs from three consecutive batters. In his second RBI of the night, Veras laced a single to drive in Tatum. Then, Wes Kath ripped a single to right to score DJ Gladney. Shawn Goosenberg rounded out the scoring outburst, knocking an RBI single to plate Veras.
Winston-Salem's relievers were nails after taking over for Simas, totaling four shutout innings and conceding just two hits. Haylen Green was the first out of the bullpen, as the 25-year-old southpaw tossed a perfect sixth. Chase Plymell took the ensuing two innings and surrendered one hit while striking out two.
The Dash got their final run in the top of the seventh, as Michael Turner drove in Kath on a fielder's choice. Winston-Salem's Tristan Stivors entered in the ninth to seal the deal on the 6-1 victory as the Dash took their first win of the series.
Seven Dash players recorded hits in Thursday night's contest, five of whom tallied multi-hit outings. Winston-Salem finished with 14 hits overall, compared to just four for the Cyclones. Simas was awarded the win and moved to 4-1 on the season, and Brooklyn's Joander Suarez was charged with the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the year.
The win was the first since May 16 for the Dash, who currently sit 3.5 games ahead of the Greenville Drive and Rome Braves for first place in the South Atlantic League South. Winston-Salem and Brooklyn meet for game four Friday night, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. from Maimonides Park.
