Down East Wood Ducks News Release
Kinston, N.C. - After falling behind early, the Down East Wood Ducks battled to minimize damage, and tied the game in the sixth, but ultimately they fell in extra-innings, 2-1, in front of a season-best 2,815 fans at Grainger Stadium.
Down East (7-7, 57-27) falls in the series, two games to one, and now has dropped each of their last two extra-inning games, after winning seven of their first eight.
Winston-Salem (6-8, 44-34) got on the board in the first inning against Sal Mendez. Tyler Frost led off with a single, and then moved to second on an error, before advancing to third base on a Zach Remillard single. With the bases loaded, Craig Dedelow lifted a sacrifice fly to right to push Frost across and put the Dash ahead, 1-0.
Mendez was able limit the damage allowing just a run. He would then load the bases again in the third inning, but he picked up a big strikeout to hold the Dash off the scoreboard. After throwing 67 pitches over his first three frames, Mendez would settle down. He ended up going six innings, giving up just an unearned run on four hits, walked one, and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts. Mendez retired the final ten batters he faced.
The Wood Ducks would draw even in the sixth inning. Sam Huff led off with a single, and advanced from first to third when Curtis Terry singled and the ball was bobbled in left field. That set up Yohel Pozo for a sacrifice fly, which evened the score at 1-1.
Jefferson Medina loaded the bases in the seventh inning but once again was able to escape without any damage done. He would go on to hold the Dash scoreless over three innings, and send the game to extras. Meanwhile it was Will Kincanon (win, 2-3) who fired two scoreless in relief for the Dash, after Jorgan Cavanerio worked seven innings, giving up just one unearned run on six hits, and struck out eight.
Cole Uvila (loss, 2-3) entered in the tenth for the Wood Ducks and got an out on a sac bunt, before walking Jameson Fisher to put runners at the corners. Remillard then followed with a single to right, which proved to be the decisive blow.
Bennett Sousa (save, 1) entered in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Wood Ducks in order, stranding the tying run in Julio Pablo Martinez on at third base.
The Wood Ducks hit the road for six games, beginning Thursday in Salem, when they face the Red Sox at 3:05 p.m. Right-hander Josh Advocate (3-2, 3.07) will take the mound for Down East, opposed by Salem lefty Emmanuel DeJesus (5-6, 3.81). The broadcast will begin at 2:50 p.m. on 960AM The Bull, and online on 960thebull.com as well as on the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Radio Apps.
