Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - After five days of rest, the Winston-Salem Dash returned to action Friday night to kick off a three-game road set against the Asheville Tourists. The Dash failed to plate a run in the final six innings and fell 6-1 in the series opener at McCormick Field.
Andrew Dalquist got the start for Winston-Salem and turned in a solid overall outing. His only damage came in the bottom of the first inning, as Asheville's Jacob Melton launched a leadoff homer to right center field.
Dalquist settled down and didn't give up a hit in the ensuing three frames. His final line included four innings, three hits, 1 run and two strikeouts. In the top of the third, the Dash tied things up at 1.
With Taishi Nakawake aboard second with a leadoff double, Wilfred Veras laced a two-out RBI single to left field to knot the score. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tourists notched a 3-run frame off reliever Hunter Dollander.
Dollander gave up three hits and issued two walks, giving Asheville a 3-1 lead. Dylan Burns came out of the bullpen and walked in a run, pushing the Tourists ahead 4-1. The Dash had an opportunity to chip into the lead with runners on the corners and one out in the top of the second, but Veras grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Burns faced a jam in the bottom of the seventh, dealing with runners on the corners and no outs. He allowed 1 run to score via sacrifice fly, giving Asheville a 4-run lead. In total, Burns went 2.1 innings of two-hit, 1 run ball.
The Tourists tacked on another run in the eighth courtesy of a leadoff homer off Dash reliever Vince Vannelle. Trailing by 5 runs in the ninth, Winston-Salem couldn't spark a comeback and fell 6-1 in the series opener after going scoreless for the final six innings.
Dollander was charged with the loss, his fifth on the season, and Asheville's Max Roberts picked up the win. With a hit and a pair of walks, Jacob Burke extended his on-base streak to a minor league-leading 46 games between Single-A and High-A.
The Dash take the field against the Tourists for game two Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. from McCormick Field.
