WILMINGTON, Del. - Bernardo Flores turned in his third quality start of the season on Sunday, but the Dash fell 3-0 to Wilmington in the series finale at Frawley Stadium.
Flores (1-2) traded zeroes with Blue Rocks (11-12) starter Ofreidy Gomez (1-2) until the third inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, Emmanuel Rivera hit a ground ball that shortstop Yeyson Yrizarri could not field cleanly, prolonging the inning and bringing up Brandon Downes with runners on first and second. Three pitches after Yrizarri's error, Downs lofted Flores' 2-0 offering over the right-center field fence to give the Blue Rocks a 3-0 lead.
The Dash (12-12) southpaw completed six innings for the third time this season, allowing three unearned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one. Drew Hasler and Mike Morrison combined for two scoreless frames out of the Winston-Salem bullpen.
Meanwhile, Gomez shut down the Dash offense. The right-hander spun six shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out a season-high nine batters while issuing one walk. Right-hander Anthony Bender worked three scoreless innings to finish the shutout for Wilmington.
Gavin Sheets, who entered the game with the third-best on-base percentage in the Carolina League, reached base twice with a double and a walk. Despite his performance, Sunday marked the second time this season the Dash offense has been held without a run.
After Monday's scheduled off day, Winston-Salem returns to BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to begin a six-game homestand, which will feature a pair of three-game sets against the Lynchburg Hillcats and the Buies Creek Astros. Right-hander Dylan Cease (2-1, 2.79 ERA) will take the hill in the opener against Hillcats righty Zach Plesac (1-1, 3.74 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
The series opener will be the Dash's first Free Food Tuesday of the season, where fans can enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers through the seventh inning for the regular price of admission. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
