Salem Red Sox News Release

SALEM, VA (Sunday, April 29) - The Salem Red Sox had a glimmer of hope late in the game Sunday afternoon, getting the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't finish the job and lost 5-3 to the visiting Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Haley Toyota Field.

Salem (14-10) continued to scuffle in run-scoring situations, going 3-14 with runners in scoring position after being held to an 0-4 line in such spots Saturday night. The Pelicans (8-16) earned just their second series win of the season and withstood the late charge from Salem in the bottom of the ninth. The Sox got strong work out of their bullpen, allowing just two singles in 4.2 shutout innings while recording nine strikeouts to keep the team in the game.

Neither team could break through until the top of the fourth, as Myrtle Beach got to Salem starter Hildemaro Requena (L, 0-1). Vimael Machin and Jhonny Pereda cracked consecutive singles to lead off the frame, putting runners at first and second. Wladimir Galindo smacked a double to score Machin, and Tyler Alamo singled home Pereda, putting runners at the corners. Kevonte Mitchell rocked a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Galindo and advancing Alamo to second. Chris Pieters grounded out to second to move Alamo up to third with two away. Connor Myers hit a grounder to third that Bobby Dalbec muffed, allowing Myers to reach safely and bringing in Alamo to run the lead to 4-0.

The Pelicans tacked on another in the top of the fifth inning, as Austin Upshaw led off with a single before Pereda smashed a one-out triple to score him and chase Requena from the game. Jordan Weems entered the game and fanned Galindo and Alamo to end the threat with Salem trailing 5-0.

The Sox finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth against Myrtle Beach ace Matt Swarmer (W, 2-2), who gave up a one-out walk to Carlos Tovar before hitting Tyler Hill with two outs. Roldani Baldwin hit a seeing-eye single through the middle to score Tovar and cut the lead to 5-1.

Salem made some noise in the bottom of the ninth against Myrtle Beach reliever Jhon Romero, who hit Tovar with a pitch with one away. Tovar advanced to second on defensive indifference, but had to stay put as Espinal bounced out to Aramis Ademan at short. Hill smashed a fly to left that just barely missed clearing the wall, bouncing off the top for an RBI double. Baldwin slapped a single to right to plate Hill and cut the lead to 5-3 before stealing second. Dalbec came up, representing the tying run, but struck out looking to end the ballgame.

Requena allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4.1 innings in his spot start. Weems allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings, fanning five to match his career-best. Hunter Smith pitched one flawless inning with two strikeouts, and Matthew Gorst gave up just one hit in one inning while whiffing two.

The Sox will have an off day Monday before hitting the road Tuesday to take on the Frederick Keys. First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is at 7:00 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
