Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Coming off a 7-4 victory on Friday night, the Winston-Salem Dash carried the momentum into game five of a six game set plating ten runs across the first three frames, downing the Hickory Crawdads 16-1 Saturday night at Truist Stadium in front of 5,009 fans.
Winston-Salem (40-37) scored early and often. Following a clean frame from starter Connor McCullough, the bats struck quickly. Following a single from White Sox top prospect, Colson Montgomery, first basemen Tim Elko drove him home on a RBI triple giving the Dash a 1-0 lead. After a walk, Elko came home to score on a RBI base knock from Shawn Goosenberg putting Winston-Salem up 2-0 after an inning.
McCullough kept the Hickory (39-36) bats quiet in the second, and the Dash offense exploded in the bottom half of the inning. After the first two batters walked to lead off, Montgomery continued his tear against the Crawdads bringing home both runners on a double to the base of the wall in right doubling the Dash lead, 4-0. Montgomery came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Elko picking up his second RBI on the evening.
Following the RBI in the first, Goosenberg wanted more. With two runners on, the Northwestern product laced a triple into the left field corner scoring both and pushing the lead to seven. Loidel Chapelli brought home Goosenberg following the triple on a RBI single and the Dash took an 8-0 lead to the third.
The Crawdads had no answer for McCullough who settled into a groove, sitting the visitors down in order in the third. Winston-Salem tacked on another pair of runs in the third on a RBI single from Wilfred Veras and another sacrifice fly by Elko, giving McCullough a 10-0 lead to work with.
The right hander kept the Crawdads bats dormant. The Maumelle, Arkansas native at one point sat down 13 batters in order stretching from the second with one out until the sixth inning when Keyber Rodriguez blooped in a single. McCullough finished his night after six innings allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out four.
McCullough departed with a 10-0 lead on his way to his second win of the season. Winston-Salem tacked on a trio of runs in the seventh and eighth before Hickory got on the scoreboard on a solo home run from Griffin Cheney in the ninth, but the Dash took game five, 16-1.
Six members of the Dash lineup picked up multi-hit outings, including Montgomery and Veras who picked up three hits on the evening. Winston-Salem finished the nights with 20 hits, a new high on the season.
Winston-Salem and Hickory meet for the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
