
Darel Slay joins Greyhounds

WHEELING, WV â The Ohio Valley Greyhounds of the United Indoor Football Association are proud to announce the signing of Darel Slay (6-4, 260, South Carolina).
Slay played two years of college football at the University of South Carolina, playing strongside linebacker and defensive end. Playing under legendary coach Lou Holtz, Slay tallied 46 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 quarterback hurries, 1 sack, and one fumble recovery in his two seasons at USC. He was named the Providence Hospital All-Heart Player of the Season for 2003, selected by Providence Hospital and Coach Holtz.
Prior to becoming a Gamecock, Darel played junior college football at Holmes Community College in Mississippi. He was named a JuCo All-American in 2001 after cording 104 tackles for the season. Slay was rated a five-star recruit by rivals.com as well as being listed as the 14th-best JuCo transfer for the 2002 season. The Brunswick, Georgia native was pursued by the likes of Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan State, UCLA, and West Virginia before choosing South Carolina.
Darel led Brunswick High School to a Georgia Class 5A Championship in 1999 and was selected to Georgia's North-South All-Star Game. In his senior season alone, Slay accumulated 177 tackles and 3 interceptions.
Known for his blazing speed (4.6 forty-yard dash) to go along with his size, Slay was named Savannah (Ga.) Morning News Player of the Year in 1999. Darel's brother, Dwayne, is a safety for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
