Wilson Tobs News Release
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (June 6, 2011) - The Outer Banks Daredevils (4-2) handed the Wilson Tobs (1-5) their fourth straight loss in the Coastal Plain League on Monday night, as the Tobs fell 14-4 in their first visit to the First Flight Baseball Complex this season. The Daredevils scored their 14 runs on 15 hits, the most Wilson has given up this season.
The Tobs took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. First Baseman Jeff Kremer took a walk to lead off the inning, and then P/DH Steve Nikorak reached on an error by the shortstop Mike Levine. The next batter, 3B Brandon Elliot, was hit by a pitch to load the bases for RF Ryan Daughtry, who took advantage by lacing a single to the right side and putting Wilson on top 1-0.
That lead did not last long as in the bottom of the third the Daredevils used six two-out hits to drive in seven runs and take a commanding 7-1 advantage. The big hit in the inning was delivered by DH Alexander Aurrichio, who smashed a double to right that drove in two. In total, Outer Banks had seven hits in the inning, and four of their seven runs were earned.
The Tobs tried to crawl back in the fourth when SS Angelo LaBruna delivered a bases loaded double to drive in two and bring Wilson to within four, 7-3. But, in the bottom of the frame the Daredevils answered right back getting two runs of their own off of two hits and an error by Tobs pitcher Lance Honeycutt, making the score 9-3.
Outer Banks stretched its lead in the bottom of the fifth after two singles to begin the inning and a passed ball put two in scoring position. Right fielder Donnie Corsner drove both runners home on a single, and the Daredevils tacked on one more to go up 12-3.
Wilson got one long ball on the night off the bat of CF Andrew Geenen in the sixth inning. The solo homer was his first of the season and the team's second. Catcher Chad Carman went yard for the Daredevils, hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to close out the scoring for Outer Banks.
RHP Steve Nikorak (0-2) got the start and loss for the Tobs as he gave up seven runs (four earned) on six hits, walked one, and struck out three in 2 and 2/3 innings. Replacing him was Honeycutt, who worked just 1/3 of an inning, giving up two runs on one hit and one wild pitch. LHP Jon Levin and RHP Dan Brown also worked from the mound for the Tobs.
RHP Brandon Smith (2-0) earned his second win of the season for Outer Banks by working five innings, and giving up three runs (all earned) on five hits, two walks, two strikeouts, and two hit batsmen.
The Tobs are back on the road tomorrow when they head to Edenton, NC for the second time in four days to take on the Edenton Steamers for the third time this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Brice Rivenbark (1-0), making his second start of the season. The next Tobs home game will be Wednesday, June 8 at 7:05pm against the Morehead City Marlins. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
