14-Run Outburst Propels Wilmington to Win Over Fayetteville
June 6, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The SwampDogs suffered their first loss of the season Monday night in convincing fashion, falling 14-5 to the Wilmington Sharks at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Every Wilmington starter reached base safely at least twice against a quartet of SwampDogs pitchers, who couldn't find the form of the previous five games. Starter Mark Kuzma lasted just 3.1 innings, while reliever Rusty White (0-1) surrendered three runs (two earned) in his first CPL outing of the year and suffered the loss.
Jacob Mayers (1-0) made his first start of the year for Wilmington (3-4) and went five innings to earn the win. He allowed all five runs, but saw his team score three in the top of the six to take the lead for good and help him record the victory.
Danny Gesick had the biggest hit of the night for Fayetteville (5-1), delivering a bases loaded triple that plated all three runs and tied the game at 5 in the bottoms of the third inning. They would be the last runs the SwampDogs would score all night.
The SwampDogs will spend the next four days on the road before returning home to J.P. Riddle Stadium on Saturday night against Florence. The first 500 fans 21 and up will receive a free pint glass courtesy of R.A. Jeffreys Distributing and Budweiser. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
