Danny Poma Honored with Player of the Week Award
August 11, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced that outfielder Daniel Poma has been selected by the Frontier League as Player of the Week, a weekly award chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.
The Monterey, California native has flourished in the leadoff spot for Washington this season. Before the start of their six-game road swing to Windy City and Evansville, the first-year player for Washington is in the upper echelon of Frontier League hitters. As the team's everyday leadoff hitter, Poma leads the Wild Things in almost every offensive category. In 73 games, he ranks first amongst his teammates in batting average (.308,), hits (89), doubles (21) and stolen bases (29).
Before signing a professional contract with Washington last October, Poma spent the latter half of 2013 with the Laredo Lemurs of the independent American Association. Poma batted .319 and swiped 19 of 20 stolen bases for Laredo before he was acquired in the offseason by Washington in exchange for the rights to former Wild Things pitchers Amalio Diaz and Matt Phillips. Poma, who was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 10th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft, played in four games for the Diamondbacks' rookie league affiliate in Missoula, Montana before he was released at age 24.
Collegiately, Poma played for three seasons at Cuesta Junior College in California before transferring to Hofstra University where he became an All-American as a senior in 2012. While at Hofstra, Poma was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the nation's best college baseball player and graduated with the school's record for single season hits (102), doubles (32) and runs (78).
Poma and the Wild Things begin a three game set against the Windy City Thunderbolts Tuesday August 12th, at 8:05 p.m. EDT. The game can be heard on the official radio partner of the Wild Things, WJPA 95.3 FM. For more information and for tickets to remaining games in the 2014 season, call 724-250-9555.
