Damian Harrell Wins Maxwell Award
Published on March 2, 2006 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
Ron Jaworski, Maxwell Football Club President and National Selection Chairman announced that, in conjunction with Harrah's officials, they have named ESPN Anchor and NFL Sideline Reporter Suzy Kolber as the Sports Broadcaster of the Year. Jaworski stated that the Harrah's Award is voted on jointly by a special committee of the Maxwell Football Club. This is the third year the award has been presented. The Maxwell Football Club also announced that former University of Texas coach, Darrell Royal, has been named the 17th Annual Reds Bagnell Award winner for Contributions to the Game of Football and of the Colorado Crush is the 2nd Annual Al Lucas Award winner as Arena Football League Player of the Year.
Since 2001, Kolber has served as the sideline reporter for ESPN's Sunday Night Football, cable television's most-watched series for each of its 19 seasons. Widely praised by critics for elevating that role to new heights, Kolber was named to Sports Business Daily's 2004 list of the 10 favorite sports TV personalities of the past 10 years. In 2006, Kolber got her first Super Bowl assignment as a reporter during ABC Sports' broadcast of Super Bowl XL in Detroit, where she also contributed to the network's pre-game show. This fall Kolber will shift from Sunday to Monday nights when the NFL's signature series Monday Night Football moves to ESPN. She will team with play-by-play commentator Al Michaels, analyst Joe Theismann and fellow reporter Michele Tafoya.
Under Darrell Royal, the Texas teams were known for their discipline. They played hard, clean and smart with a minimum of rah-rah. Royal won more SWC games (109) and more conference championships than any other coach in league history. He was named coach of the decade for the Å60s by ABC-TV. He was inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1983
Colorado Offensive Specialist Damian Harrell was named the winner of the 2nd Annual Al Lucas Award as Arena Football League Player of the Year. He was named the AFL Offensive Player of the Year in June of 2005 by the Arena Football League.
These winners will join the other winners at the Maxwell Football Club's 69th Annual Awards banquet to be held at the Atlantic City Harrah's Hotel on Friday, March 3, 2006. For further information please contact Bob Clark, phone 610-277-8900 or visit our website: www.Maxwellfootbballclub.org.
