
AFL honors five players with monthly awards for January

NEW YORK - Dallas Desperados WR/DB WILL PETTIS, Utah Blaze OS SIAHA BURLEY, Austin Wranglers DS DAMON MASON, Georgia Force rookie DS CHRIS BROWN and Los Angeles Avengers kicker REMY HAMILTON have been named Ironman, Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Rookie and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for the months of January/February of the 2006 season.
IRONMAN: Pettis (6-0, 200, Midwestern State), now in his fourth AFL season, posted 33 receptions for 400 yards and eight touchdowns in five games in January/February. On defense he added 15.5 total tackles, 1.0 tackles-for-loss, four interceptions for 33 return yards, one forced fumble and three passes defensed. Pettis also contributed on special teams with 26 kick returns for 457 yards (17.6 avg.). He ranks second in the AFL with 910 all-purpose yards and is tied for second in the League with his four interceptions. Pettis also was chosen as AFL Ironman of the Week for his Week 5 performance in a 55-48 win over Las Vegas.
OFFENSIVE: Burley (6-0, 185, Central Florida), now in his sixth AFL season, leads the AFL in scoring (102 points), touchdowns (17), all-purpose yards (1,003), receptions (54) and receiving yards (771). His 36 points (6 TDs) and 259 receiving yards in a Week 3 loss to New York are AFL single-game highs for 2006. Burley has added 14 kickoff returns for 232 yards (16.6 avg.). He is currently on pace to record 203 receptions, 2,891 yards and 64 touchdowns, which would all be AFL single-season records.
ADT DEFENSIVE: Mason (5-9, 190, SW Louisiana), now in his fourth AFL season, currently leads the AFL with six interceptions, including five in the first two weeks of the season. He has already surpassed his 2005 total of five. Mason is just one interception away from tying his single-season high of seven, which he set in 2000 with the Orlando Predators. He also registered 28.0 total tackles and five passes defensed and was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2.
ROOKIE: In his first five AFL contests, Brown (6-3, 195, UAB) has compiled 37.0 total tackles, four interceptions for 90 return yards, one forced fumble and six passes defensed. His tackle and passes defensed totals lead all AFL rookies and his four interceptions ties him for the most among all AFL rookies. Brown earned Week 4 ADT Defensive Player of the Week after posting 7.5 tackles, three interceptions and two pass break-ups in the Force 's 54-34 road win over Las Vegas.
KICKER: Hamilton (6-1, 190, Michigan), now in his ninth AFL season, has been near perfect in 2006, hitting 11 of 13 field goal attempts, including a long of 42 yards, and 25-for-26 on extra points. He leads all kickers in scoring with 58 points and is tops in the League in field goals and field goal percentage (.846).
