Dallas Wings Sign Teaira McCowan to Multi-Year Deal
February 1, 2023 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Dallas Wings News Release
Arlington, TX - The Dallas Wings have signed center Teaira McCowan to a multi-year deal, the team announced today.
"We are thrilled to have signed Teaira to an agreement that will keep her in a Wings uniform for the foreseeable future," Dallas Wings President & CEO Greg Bibb stated. "When we acquired Teaira last year, the vision was to bring her to Dallas for the long-term. I'm pleased we were able to reach an agreement with her that allows her to continue her career with the Wings organization for years to come. We share Teaira's excitement in having her call Dallas home."
McCowan, acquired via trade during the 2022 offseason from the Indiana Fever, sparked the Wings late season surge into and in the playoffs, as she won the WNBA's Western Conference Player of the Month for August. During the month of August, McCowan recorded four double-doubles in her seven games, averaging 17.4 points and 11.6 rebounds, while shooting 55% from the field. McCowan was the first Wings player to be named Player of the Month since the franchise moved to Dallas.
The Brenham, Texas native appeared in 33 games in 2022 and averaged 11 points, seven rebounds and made 60.2% of her field goals, which was the sixth highest percentage in the WNBA last season. Against Las Vegas on August 4 (82-80 Dallas win), McCowan led the Wings with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Her 10 offensive rebounds were the most in a single game in the WNBA since 2017, and she became the first player in franchise history to grab at least 10 offensive rebounds.
"I am so excited to continue to play for the Wings organization and to be able to call Dallas home for years to come, as this is where I wanted to be all along," McCowan said. "I believe we are putting something special together here in Dallas and I cannot wait to reunite with my teammates and compete for WNBA championships."
For her career, McCowan has appeared in 121 games, starting 64, and has averaged nearly 11 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks over her four years in the WNBA. Prior to joining Dallas, McCowan spent three years with the Fever and owns the two highest marks in Indiana franchise history for rebounds in a single season (308 - 2021, 305 - 2019). She was the third overall selection by the Fever out of Mississippi State in the 2019 WNBA Draft.
McCowan is currently playing overseas with Galatasaray in Istanbul, Turkey and is averaging 16.5 points and 10.2 rebounds in the Turkish Women's Basketball Super League. She also is playing for the Turkish National Team in the EuroBasket Qualifying Tournament and is averaging 27 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting 72.7% from the field, in four games of action.
The 2023 Wings season tips off at College Park Center on Saturday, May 20 vs. the Atlanta Dream. Full season ticket packages, as well as other flexible ticket plans for the season, can be purchased at DallasWings.com.
