Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
READING, PA - Daryl Maday worked seven scoreless innings and Andy D'Alessio drove in four runs as the Flying Squirrels rolled over the Reading Phillies, 6-0, in front of 6,966 on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. The shutout marked the league-best seventh of the season for the Squirrels, as they salvaged the final game of a three-game series.
Maday (7-0) matched Altoona's Jared Hughes for the Eastern League lead with his seventh win of the season. He turned in a seven-inning masterpiece, allowing just four hits and walking two. He struck out five and did not allow an R-Phil past second base during his outing.
Andy D'Alessio returned from the disabled list in style, and gave Richmond the game's first lead in the second inning. In his first at-bat since May 3rd, he drilled an offering from Reading right-hander Phillippe Aumont over the wall in right-center field for a 1-0 Richmond lead.
The Squirrels tacked a run onto their lead in the third when Aumont walked Darren Ford with one out. Ford promptly stole second base and came in when Conor Gillaspie flared a single to left field to give Richmond a 2-0 advantage.
Richmond added two more to their lead and chased Aumont in the fifth. Ford led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a two-base throwing error charged to Aumont. Aumont then walked Brandon Crawford to put runners on the corners. Gillaspie then sent a swinging-bunt single up the third-base line that scored Ford. Aumont was lifted from the ballgame in favor of Tyson Brummett with two runners on and nobody out. Brummett popped out Thomas Neal, but then conceded an RBI single to D'Alessio, scoring Crawford to run the Richmond lead to 4-0.
Aumont (1-4) was charged with the four earned runs over four-plus innings of work. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out just one as he endured his fourth loss of the season.
D'Alessio supplied two insurance runs for Richmond in the top of the ninth inning, cracking a double off of Matt German that scored Gillaspie and Neal. D'Alessio's four hits and RBIs both established career-highs.
Tony Pena Jr. worked through the final two innings on the hill for the Squirrels without allowing a run or a hit.
The Flying Squirrels travel to Binghamton, NY, to open a four-game series with the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) on Monday night at 6:35 PM at NYSEG Stadium. RHP David Mixon (4-2, 3.28) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Mike Antonini (3-4, 4.84) for Binghamton.
