New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Carlos Gutierrez delivered a fine start and notched his first victory of the season as the Rock Cats downed Binghamton, 5-2 before a sellout crowd of 6,489 fans - the third-straight capacity-filled crowd of the weekend.

Gutierrez (1-3) scattered seven hits and allowed two runs through 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four.

The Rock Cats backed him up by taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without ever recording a hit in the inning. Leadoff man Ben Revere reached base on a walk and swiped second - his team-leading 15th stolen base - before moving to third on a groundout. With two outs, Revere crossed home plate on a wild pitch by Scott Shaw.

In the third, the Rock Cats looked to add on to its lead with back-to-back singles by Chris Cates and Revere. Rene Tosoni drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but the ‘Cats came up empty as Erik Lis grounded out to first to end the inning. The Rock Cats grounded into two quick outs to open the fourth before Steve Singleton laced a double into left field. Allan de San Miguel drove him in with a single to right for a 2-0 lead.

Binghamton battled back in the top of the fifth when Michael Moras's RBI single cut the lead in half, 2-1. Kirk Nieuwenhuis then bunted to third base to drive in Carlos Guzman from third and tied the game.

The Rock Cats answered back in the bottom of the inning. Mark Dolenc drew a one-out walk and stole second before Tosoni was walked to put runners on the corners. Erik Lis singled to load the bases and knock Shaw out of the game. Yangervis Solarte greeted Emary Frederick with a line drive single that knocked in Dolenc and Tosoni.

Matthew Williams picked up his first save with 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Shaw (4-3) surrendered four runs on five hits and four walks through 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Revere finished with a game-high three hits.

Of Note: The Rock Cats established a new weekend attendance mark for the month of May over the last three days at New Britain Stadium as 21,362 fans watched the Rock Cats square off three times against visiting Binghamton. The previous mark was set just last May when the ‘Cats entertained 20,227 patrons against Binghamton. The largest three-day weekend gathering ever at New Britain Stadium also occurred in 2009 when 21,505 fans witnessed the Rock Cats do baseball battle with Akron, between August 14-16.
