Danbury Trashers News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY--Sly Daigle became the all-time UHL wins leader as he stopped five of six Frostbite players in the shootout on Saturday night as Danbury came from behind to top Adirondack 3-2. The win, Daigle's 156th, eclipsed Joe Dimaline's 155 that he set during his years in the United Hockey League.
Danbury and the Frostbite engaged in a hard fought first period for the second straight game, but Drew Omicioli's 11th of the season gave the Trashers a 1-0 lead after the first. The goal was scored at the 19:03 mark and assisted by Mike Omicioli.
However, the Frostbite dominated the second period as they outshot Danbury 18-8. Adirondack's goals came from Kevin Watters from Hugo Belanger on a breakaway at the 9:48 mark, followed by a Belanger power-play goal at the 11:52 mark.
J.M. Daoust tied the score on his 3rd goal of the season at the 6:50 mark from Jeff Daw, who redeemed himself after he took the penalty that led to Adirondack's second goal.
In the shootout, Watters scored in the opening round on Daigle, while Fred Belanger tied the shootout at 1-1 in the 3rd round. After Hugo Belanger missed in the 5th round, Danbury's Shawn Collymore tallied the game winner as he deked Derek Gustafson to give him an open net. Blue Bennefield missed on Adirondack's last try.
The win improved Danbury's record to 13-7-2 for 28 points, seven behind the Frostbite, as they fell to 17-6-1 this season. Daigle stopped 35 shots while Gustafson saved 28 for Adirondack.
The Trashers will face off at home on Sunday afternoon against Fort Wayne at 5:30pm. All fans are invited to skate with the players following the game and are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the 2nd Annual Trashers Food Drive. The items will benefit the Salvation Army and Community Action in Danbury.
