Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), held on through regulation, and found themselves locked in a tie after 60 minutes of play as they participated in their third shootout of the season against the Elmira Jackals. The Jackals outshot the Vipers in the extra rounds, winning by a final score of 4-3 at the Roanoke Civic Center Saturday night.

Jarrett Konkle got the Jackals on the scoreboard first, netting a shot past goaltender Jamie Hodson at the 4:31 mark of the first period. Rookie winger L.P. Martin would even the score before the period's end at 13:23 off passes from David Beauregard and Rico Fatticci. Just 34 seconds into the start of the second period, Martin would give the Vipers their first lead of the match, scoring off a rebound shot by Beauregard. Elmira would even the score again, as Jackals newcomer Jason Sessa scored his first of two goals on the night, at 11:11 of the period.

Jan Jas would give the Vipers their second lead at 0:23 of the third period, scoring before one minute had passed on the scoreboard clock for the second period in a row. Jas was fed the puck off the sticks of Alex Jerofejevs and Martin. Just over five minutes later, Sessa would wipe the scoreboard clean again for the Jackals, scoring on an Elmira power play at 6:07 of the third. Neither team was successful in scoring for the remainder of regulation.

Elmira sent Sessa out as its first shooter, but he came up short, as Hodson made the save, and the Vipers sent their own star out in Martin, who was also unsuccessful. Sean Regan and Konstantin Kalmikov scored in the next consecutive rounds for the Jackals, and the Vipers matched that with just one goal from their captain Beauregard in round three. Konkle and Vipers shootout specialist Josh Tataryn would both come up short in round four for their clubs, but Craig MacDonald would close the deal for the Jackals in round five as he faked Hodson to his left and slipped the puck past the outstretched netminder on the right side.

Tonight the Vipers suffered one of their more disappointing losses during their current seven-game losing slide, but showed signs of life, forcing a shootout to earn one point in the division standings. The Vipers have been the victims of bad luck, including the loss of forwards Mark Scott and Matt Miller, who had combined for 23 points on the season before being placed on the injured reserve. They look to start a winning streak as they face the Danbury Trashers in four straight games, beginning Wednesday, December 14th in Danbury and ending Sunday, December 18th at 5:05p.m. back at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Voice of the Vipers Matt Rosen will be joined by a special on-air guest on Wednesday - tune into the broadcast on 3WR 910AM at 7:00p.m. to find out who it is! Call the Vipers office at (540) 345-PUCK (7825) to get your tickets for the next homestand against the Trashers next Saturday and Sunday. You won't want to miss this division rivalry!
