Grand Rapids Drive News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Overtime is Dahntay Jones' time.
The veteran guard scored six of his 16 points in overtime to help the Grand Rapids Drive edge the Erie BayHawks 104-100 on Friday night in front of 2,845 fans at the Erie Insurance Arena.
Grand Rapids (13-13), the affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, is 3-0 this season in overtime.
Lorenzo Brown had a steal with 1:30 left in regulation and went the other way for a layup to give Grand Rapids a 94-90 lead. But Erie tied it up at 94-94 to send it to overtime.
Devin Ebanks scored a team-high 17 points. Henry Sims had a strong second half and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds and Kelsey Barlow added 15 points.
Jones, a 6-foot-6 guard out of Duke, was just 3-of-11 from the field, but was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. He drained a 3-pointer early in the 3-minute overtime to set the tone for the win.
Brown checked into the game midway though the first quarter, wearing his familiar No. 17 jersey. The veteran guard had been away from the Grand Rapids Drive for a month, but he played like he never left.
Brown finished with 13 points, four steals and three rebounds.
Brown had spent almost the entire month of January in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns. He signed the first of two 10-day contracts with Phoenix on Jan. 2. The 6-foot-5 guard played in eight games, averaging 2.5 points and 1.4 assists.
Barlow and Brown each had nine points at the break as the Drive led 53-45 at halftime. Grand Rapids held Erie to a season-low 16 points in the second quarter, despite the Bay Hawks draining three 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes.
Early in the second quarter, Jones had a spin move in the paint and laid it up and in and was fouled on the play. He drained the free throw to give Grand Rapids its first lead - 33-29 - since the first two minutes of the game.
Jordan Siebert led all scorers with 29 points for Erie (11-18). The guard drained eight 3-pointers, which is one short of the franchise record. Nnanna Egwu added 23 points and eight rebounds.
Grand Rapids next plays Saturday night when it hosts Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. at the DeltaPlex Arena.
