Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx completed a three-game sweep of the Birmingham Barons with a 9-2 win on Wednesday afternoon in front of 4,837 fans at the Hoover Met. The Barons loss drops them to a game and a half behind first place Montgomery who beat Jacksonville 2-1.

Ricky Nolasco (5-0) became the Southern League's first five-game winner after tossing 5.2 innings and giving up just one run on five hits and striking out three. The D-Jaxx offense provided plenty of run support but had to wait for the Barons bullpen before they could do much damage as Barons starter Corwin Malone (0-2) worked 4.2 solid innings in his second start of the season. Malone gave up just one run on four hits and struck four as he took a no decision.

Jerry Owens and Chris Young each had hits on the day to extended their hitting streaks. Owens' current streak is at eight and Young's is at a team-high nine games.

Tetsu Yofu (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on three hits and four walks over 3.1 innings. It was just Yofu's second outing of the year as he joined the team from extended spring on April 29th. Talley Haines pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to notch his third save of the season.

The Barons have the day off tomorrow before they travel up to Chattanooga to take on the Lookouts in a short three-game set on Friday. RHP Sean Tracey (3-1, 1.31) will take the hill for Birmingham and will face RHP Richie Gardner (2-1, 6.84) with the game time set for 6:15 CDT.
