D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (November 17, 2009) - D.C. United announced today rookies Chris Pontius and Rodney Wallace will be among the 18 Major League Soccer players to travel to South Africa for the Generation adidas trip. The group will head to the 2010 World Cup host country for ten days starting on November 27, returning to the United States on December 8.
The Generation adidas trip will include training sessions, clinics and exhibition matches against the Orlando Pirates and AJAX Cape Town reserves. The participants will travel to Johannesburg and Cape Town and will have a chance to visit the Apartheid Museum, the Nelson Mandela House and the Soccer City Stadium. The players have also been invited to the 2010 World Cup draw in Cape Town.
In his first season with D.C. United, Chris Pontius tallied four goals and three assists while playing in 28 League matches (23 starts). He was named a finalist for the Gatorade Rookie of the Year. Playing virtually every offensive position, Pontius contributed eight goals and six assists in 40 total appearances (31 starts) in all competitions.
Rodney Wallace, United's first pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft (6th overall), quietly became one of the steadiest players for the Black-and-Red throughout the year. The defender/midfielder hybrid accounted for three goals and three assists in 28 League games (25 starts). The rookie tallied the most minutes of any United player over the course of the entire season (3,117).
In 2004 adidas and Major League Soccer signed a landmark agreement that included the Generation adidas program. Specifically, Generation adidas is the new youth player development program designed to identify and nurture elite youth soccer talent in the United States.
