D.C. United News Release

Washington, D.C. (July 19, 2006) - D.C. United midfielder Brian Carroll earned Sierra Mist 'Goal of the Week' honors for Week 16. His screaming one-timer from 25 yards came during United's 3-2 win against the Columbus Crew on Saturday, July 15. Carroll's strike came less than five minutes into the second half and gave United a 2-1 lead at the time. After a weak clearance by a Columbus player, Carroll met the ball with a vicious one-timer from the top of the Crew penalty area. The ball just nicked off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

The tally was Carroll's first goal of the 2006 season and earned him the first 'Goal of the Week' award of his career. It was also the second goal of the midfielder's professional career. Carroll has three assists this season.

Carroll is the fifth United player to earn the Sierra Mist 'Goal of the Week' this year. Facundo Erpen took home Week 4 honors and Alecko Eskandarian won Week 7 honors, while Christian Gomez and Jaime Moreno won back-to-back in Week 11 and Week 12, respectively. D.C. United players have won the award 16 times, the most for any team, since the award was first given was in 2004.
