LA Galaxy News Release
RICHMOND, VA (Wednesday, July 19, 2006) - The Los Angeles Galaxy and Crystal Palace F.C. of the English Coca-Cola League Championship, the second-highest level of English soccer, played to a 1-1 tie in a game that was postponed at halftime due to a heavy thunder and lightning storm. Crystal Palace got on the board first in the fifth minute, and the Galaxy tied things up in the 28th minute on a Paulo Nagamura goal before a fierce halftime thunder and lightning storm forced the game to be canceled.
Crystal Palace started the game quickly, taking a 1-0 lead in just the fifth minute on a wicked shot by Jon Macken. Charlie Sheringham started the Palace attack when he received a pass at the top of the Galaxy 18-yard box. He fired a hard shot on goal that Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin was able to punch away to the left sideline. Macken collected the ball about 18 yards out on the wing and launched a low shot from a difficult angle that beat a recovering Cronin to give Crystal Palace the early advantage.
The Galaxy attempted to even the score in the 13th minute on a Cobi Jones corner kick from the left side. Jones lofted the ball into the center of the Palace six yard box, where Chris Albright touched the ball forward over a Crystal Palace defender. Galaxy forward Alan Gordon was waiting, and headed the ball toward goal from close range, only to see it ounce off the cross bar. Albright chased down the rebound, but his shot went wide and to the right.
Los Angeles tied the game at 1-1 in the 28th minute as Nagamura found the back of the net for the Galaxy. With Crystal Palace attempting to move out of their end, a hard charging John Wolyniec knocked the ball away from Michael Hughes and then pushed it forward to an on-rushing Nagamura. Nagamura took several touches past a Palace defender and then buried a low shot past the sliding goalkeeper Julian Speroni to make it 1-1.
Albright and Wolyniec almost combined to give L.A. the lead in the 42nd minute, as Cobi Jones fed an overlapping Albright on the right side in the Crystal Palace penalty area. Albright fought through his defender and then dished off to Wolyniec, who fired an open, low shot on goal from about 16 yards out that forced Speroni to make a diving save.
With the Galaxy carrying the momentum into the halftime break, the teams were unable to take the field for the second half because of the deluge. The Galaxy return to MLS action on July 22 when they face the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio at 1:00 p.m. PT.
