D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (May 9, 2011) - D.C. United announced today an agreement to become title sponsor of the popular regional 4-on-4 "SoccerFest" tournament. D.C. United SoccerFest - Driven by Volkswagen will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26, 2011, at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA.
"D.C. United recognizes the value of this great soccer property," said United Executive Vice President Stephen Zack. "With the help of our friends at Volkswagen, we're excited to stage this great event for soccer players throughout the region."
D.C. United SoccerFest - Driven by Volkswagen is a 4-on-4 soccer tournament open to all ages and skill levels, with divisions based on age, gender, and ability. Teams can consist of up to six players with four players on the field at a time. The tournament's small-sided layout was created to offer young soccer players the opportunity to experience increased touches on the ball in a fun, festival style tournament format, and divisions have since expanded to include boys and girls ages five through 16, as well as adults.
Entering its 18th year, the SoccerFest franchise continues to attract competition from the entire D.C. metropolitan area and beyond, with levels of play ranging from recreational through elite. Returning to Virginia for the first time since 2003, the tournament has averaged roughly 300 team entries over the past nine years at its previous locations in Columbia, MD and Poolesville, MD.
"Initially created as a satellite event ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup games played here in Washington, this tournament has grown into one of the most popular and highly anticipated participant sports events of the year," said Tournament Director Steve Winter. "We now look to our new partners to expand upon that legacy."
United for D.C. returns as the tournament's charity beneficiary, continuing the tradition of the event's charitable involvement. United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United, is a youth-centered 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to champion educational, health, and recreational programs and events that serve disadvantaged youth of greater Washington, DC by engaging the resources and skills of D.C. United and its community.
Each tournament participant will receive with their registration one ticket to D.C. United home game against Houston Dynamo on Saturday, June 25 at RFK Stadium.
