D.C. United Sign Midfielder Sofiane Djeffal

Washington, DC - D.C. United have signed midfielder Sofiane Djeffal pending receipt of his P-1 Visa after selecting the Oregon State University standout 36th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 11. The Black-and-Red have signed Djeffal to a Reserve Minimum contract with options in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

"We have been very impressed with Sofiane's maturity and presence as a player since he arrived with the team in preseason," Lucy Rushton, D.C. United General Manager, said. "He is a fierce competitor with ability on both sides of the ball. As well as being positionally aware and a robust ball winner, he has composure in possession and a wide passing range. We are excited to add his skillset to the roster as we continue our preparations for the MLS opener against Charlotte FC on Feb. 26."

Djeffal scored 18 goals and recorded 19 assists in 62 appearances (62 starts) for Oregon State University from 2018 to 2021. In 2021, Djeffal scored six goals-three game-winners-and recorded six assists in 19 appearances on the way to being named the Pac-12 Player of the Year in addition to being a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. The 22-year-old was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team every season during his time as a Beaver (2018-2021). Additionally, Djeffal was awarded the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award in 2018.

Djeffal, a French national, rose through the ranks of the FC Nantes youth academy. He spent 11 years with the Ligue 1 club and won an Under-17 league title and the highly regarded Montaigu U-17 Tournament in 2015.
