FC Cincinnati Acquire Midfielder Júnior Moreno from D.C. United
February 25, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati News Release
FC Cincinnati have acquired midfielder Júnior Moreno from D.C. United, the club announced today. In return, the club sends $250,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM), with a possible additional $175,000 in performance-based incentives to D.C. The Orange and Blue have signed Moreno to a contract through 2022, with option for the 2023 season.
In four seasons with D.C. United, Moreno has made 97 regular season appearances including 91 starts where he has scored one goal and distributed nine assists. He started in each of the Black-and-Red's two MLS Cup Playoff appearances in 2018 and 2019.
"I'd like to welcome Júnior Moreno to FC Cincinnati," said FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright. "His experience, both in MLS and internationally, will be a valuable addition to our group."
Last season with D.C., Moreno ranked first on the team in tackles (40), and second on the team in games played (28), games started (25) and minutes played (2,148). He completed the highest percentage of passes (83.7%) of any D.C. United player to appear in more than 15 games.
Since his debut with the Venezuelan National Team in June 2017 against the United States in a friendly, Moreno has been a mainstay in the squad. He's earned 35 caps for La Vinotinto. He has appeared 14 times in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, including most recently coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes at Uruguay on February 2. He has scored one career goal and added two assists for his country.
Moreno was acquired by D.C. United from Zulia FC in Venezuela via transfer on January 2, 2018. In 2012, Moreno made his professional debut for Asociación Civil Deportivo Lara before moving to Zulia in 2015 where he scored three goals and recorded three assists in 64 appearances in the top tier of Venezuelan soccer.
