Revolution Open 2022 MLS Regular Season at Portland Timbers
February 25, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will begin the 2022 MLS regular season this Saturday, Feb. 26 on the road against the reigning Western Conference champion Portland Timbers. The nationally televised match kicks off from Providence Park at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX, FOX Deportes, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio. Prior to the match, tune in to WSBK-TV38 at 6:30 p.m. ET for CBS Boston's exclusive Revolution Season Kickoff special.
New England returns from the league's shortest-ever offseason after setting an MLS record with 73 points during the 2021 campaign, before falling to eventual MLS Cup champion New York City FC in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Revolution claimed 34 points on the road last season, the second-most in MLS history, en route to a 10-3-4 road mark. Since Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena's arrival in 2019, New England leads all MLS teams with 21 road victories across the regular season and playoffs. The Revs also own a 10-match unbeaten streak in the Pacific time zone, a streak dating back to June 18, 2016.
Arena, who claimed his fourth-career Supporters' Shield title in 2021 and was named MLS Coach of the Year for a record fourth time, is one win shy of surpassing Sigi Schmid (240) for the most regular season victories in MLS history. Arena holds a 38-15-23 record in regular season play with New England. His .651 winning percentage with the Revs is the best in club history.
After leading MLS in goals and assists in 2021, New England returns its attacking triumvirate of Carles Gil, Adam Buksa, and Gustavo Bou, now fortified by offseason additions Sebastian Lletget and Jozy Altidore. Gil, the 2021 Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player, led the league with 18 assists, while Buksa (16 goals) and Bou (15) both ranked among the league's top-10 goal scorers last season. In addition to Lletget and Altidore, fellow newcomer and three-time MLS Cup champion Omar Gonzalez is also looking to make his Revolution debut.
This marks the Revolution's first trip to Portland since a thrilling encounter on Sept. 25, 2019. Bou and Gil each tallied goals for New England in the final 10 minutes, with Gil's penalty in second-half stoppage time sealing a come-from-behind 2-2 draw. Saturday marks the club's sixth visit to Providence Park, where the Revolution are 0-2-3. Portland leads the all-time series, 2-1-7, with four consecutive draws in the series.
