D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (February 18, 2011) - D.C. United announced today the club has re-acquired midfielder Fred from the New England Revolution in exchange for a 2013 SuperDraft 2nd round pick. The 31-year old midfielder returns to the city in which his MLS career began in 2007.
"We are excited that Fred will be back in a United jersey," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "He will make our already deep midfield that much deeper and give us a great attacking player who can create and score goals. Fred is very motivated to return to DC, and we look forward to his contributions."
Fred spent the 2010 season as a member of the Philadelphia Union, after being involved in the trade that brought Troy Perkins to DC in January. While a member of the Union, Fred played in 25 games (24 starts), totaling 1,913 minutes on the field and contributing four goals and an assist.
Following the 2010 season, the New England Revolution selected Fred in Stage Two of the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft.
Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Fred spent three full seasons with the Black-and-Red (2007-2009). In 72 total games (60 starts), the midfielder collected 11 goals and 16 assists. His best season with the Black-and-Red came during his first year in the League when he notched seven goals and seven assists during the 2007 season. The Brazilian helped D.C. capture two trophies during his first stint with United - the 2007 Supporters' Shield and the 2008 U.S. Open Cup.
Fred's younger brother, 19-year old Junior Carreiro, also plays for United. The two Brazilians become the third set of brothers to play for United in its 16-year history, following the Cooks brothers - Micah (2000-01) and Judah (1998-01) - and the three Carroll brothers - Brian (2003-07), Jeff (2006-08 and Pat (2008).
