Chicago Fire FC News Release

CHICAGO, IL (Feb. 18, 2011) - The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced today the signing of forward Diego Cháves from Uruguayan side Nacional. The 25-year-old striker leaves the Primera Division Uruguay to join the Men in Red and will be added to the club's roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Diego is a dynamic forward who can score goals and create offensively," said Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas. "His size, ability and strike rate in Uruguay should assist in his transition to MLS. Diego will join the group in Florida and begin to prepare with the team for the upcoming season."

Cháves began his professional career with Montevideo Wanderers in 2004, tallying 27 goals in 93 appearances for the club through 2009. Most recently, Cháves made 10 appearances, scoring one goal while helping Nacional to second place in the 2010 Uruguayan Apertura tournament.

The 25-year-old striker becomes the second Uruguayan to join the club during the 2010-11 offseason and reunites with Gaston Puerari after playing with him at Montevideo Wanderers in 2009.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Cháves experienced stints with Mexican sides Queretaro and Veracruz from 2009-10.

The Fire host Opening Day at TOYOTA PARK against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, March 26 at 3:00 PM CT.
