The Black-and-Red, who reached the Open Cup quarterfinals last season before falling to FC Dallas in penalty kicks, has faced both teams once in Open Cup play, defeating Wilmington- 1-0 in the fourth round in 2003, before falling to New York in the quarterfinals 3-2 during the same year.

The Red Bulls, formerly known as the MetroStars, were bounced in the fourth round of last year's tournament. The team's best Open Cup finish came in 2003 when the squad was the tournament's runner-up. In MLS play, United has an all-time regular season record of 23-15-4 against New York. The two teams have faced each other twice this season, with United posting a record of 1-0-1against its Eastern Conference rival. In the team's opening game of the season, United surrendered two early goals to New York, before coming from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw on April 2. When the squad visited New York on April 22, they walked away with a 4-1 win, with Alecko Eskandarian finding the back of the net twice in the contest. The two teams will meet again on August 16 in New York, with the season-series concluding on September 23 at RFK.

The Hammerheads, a PDL Second Division squad, is no stranger to Open Cup upsets. In 2003, the Hammerheads achieved their greatest Open Cup victory by reaching the quarterfinals with a 4-1 thrashing of MLS' Dallas Burn in the fourth round. Last season, Wilmington fell to FC Dallas in the third round, forcing the MLS side into extra time before the eventual 3-1 loss.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which dates back to 1914, is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer. All affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States are eligible to participate. D.C. United won the U.S. Open Cup in 1996, the club's inaugural season, and was the runner-up in 1997.
