D.C. United News Release

Washington, D.C. (May 20, 2014)-D.C. United Academy teams traveled to Virginia Beach to play VA Rush this past weekend. All three teams won their games and shutout the Rush in all three games. The U-23s beat the defending NPSL Champions RVA FC in their opening game of the season Sunday, May 18. The U-14s played their second game of the weekend on Sunday and lost 3-1 to Bethesda-Olney.

D.C. United U-23s vs. RVA FC

U-23s: 2-0 win

Goals: Majano [7] and Redondo [82]

Shutout: Niedermeier

"I was very pleased for the group," said D.C. United U-23 Head Coach Amos Magee. "We've been hard at work for two weeks and while the game had early-season sloppy moments, the willingness to work for each other and see out a deserved win was exceptional."

Games against VA Rush

U-18s: 1-0 win

Goals: Munoz-Cantu [91]

Shutout: Knoebel and Rissler

Man of the Match: Christian Kershaw

"Christian was pivotal to the team's success once again this weekend," said D.C. United U-18 Head Coach Nolan Sheldon. "We attacked throughout the match to try and find the goal, often leaving ourselves open to be countered. Christian stayed committed to his defensive duties, cutting out the most dangerous attacks from the VA Rush, while allowing teammates to push forward."

U-16s: 5-0 win

Goals: Seye [7], Koffi [33], Mendes [54, 56] and Sandy [77]

Shutout: McMurrer and Beaudoin

Man of the Match: Daniel Reeves

"For the past several matches, DJ has consistently been a handful for opponent's defenses," said D.C. United U-16 Head Coach Tom Torres. "This week was not any different, but his selflessness and willingness to create scoring chances for others was fantastic. He also excelled in his individual and group defending phases, which led to an overall complete performance."

U-14s: 2-0 win

Goals: Gill [40] and Nicholas [52]

Shutout: Diaz and Frye

Man of the Match: Andres Villanueva

"Andres was very dynamic with his movement and was good at taking on players on the wing," said D.C. United U-14 Head Coach Jonathan Frias. "He created many scoring opportunities for his teammates with his play and was unlucky to get on the score sheet himself."

Games against Bethesda-Olney

U-14s: 3-1 loss

Goals: Cerritos [43]

"We were unable to convert our chances against Bethesda," said Frias. "We look forward to a weekend off and the ability to regroup."

The D.C. United U-18s and U-16s play Bethesda-Olney on Monday, May 26 at Richard Montgomery High School. The U-18s begin at 5 p.m. and the U-16s follow at 7:30 p.m.
