D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (August 30, 2013) - This weekend, D.C. United will host the first Generation adidas Cup regional event of 2013, as well as the second annual D.C. United friendlies. The Generation adidas Cup will be comprised of six MLS Academy teams: D.C. United, Philadelphia Union, Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, each with a 23-man roster of players born after 1997.
"As the host for the first Generation adidas Cup regional event of 2013, we are looking forward to running a successful event this coming weekend," said D.C. United Youth Development Manager Steve Olivarez. "With the support of adidas and MLS, we are confident that this will be an exciting event for all clubs involved, and are looking forward to seeing some great soccer."
United will kick off the tournament today against Philadelphia and will finish up tournament play against Toronto on tomorrow, Aug. 31. The team will finish up the weekend on Monday, Sept. 2 as it takes on Columbus in a friendly. The next regional event will be held in Montreal over Columbus Day Weekend - Friday, Oct. 10 to Monday, Oct. 14 - with the national event's exact date and location yet to be determined.
In conjunction with the Generation adidas Cup, the Black-and-Red will also host the second annual D.C. United friendlies - a 38-team spread made up of affiliate, partner and other MLS Academy clubs with teams ranging from U-12 to U-18. The friendlies will take place today through Sunday, Sept. 1.
"It's exciting for us to have all of these MLS clubs in attendance," said D.C. United U-16 Academy Head Coach Tom Torres. "This early in the year, it will be great to see where we and all of the other clubs stand. It's also a great test that will answer some questions leading into the regular season."
