
Cyclones Welcome Don Newcombe to KeySpan Park

Brooklyn, NY, July 17, 2007 - More than fifty years after helping the Dodgers' "Boys of Summer" to their first World Series title, Newk is headed back to Brooklyn! On Sunday, July 22nd, at 5 PM, legendary pitcher Don Newcombe will be appearing at KeySpan Park in Coney Island to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones' game against the Tri-City ValleyCats. He will also be there to sign autographs, as well as participate in a pre-game luncheon with fans in the Brooklyn Baseball Gallery. The first 2,500 fans into the ballpark will receive a Don Newcombe bobblehead doll as part of the team's "Brooklyn Legends" bobblehead series. Newcombe, one of the first four black players to be named to baseball's All-Star team, was instrumental in helping the Dodgers win their first World championship in 1955, posting a 20-5 record. He is the only baseball player to have won the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards.
This year, the Cyclones are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn with a series of special appearances and promotions. On August 12th, the Cyclones will celebrate Jackie Robinson Night with an appearance by his wife, Rachel, and an Ebbets Field Model giveaway. About The Brooklyn Baseball Gallery
The Brooklyn Baseball Gallery is the first and only museum dedicated solely to the grand history of baseball in Brooklyn. The Gallery opened its doors in June of 2002 and houses a unique set of baseball memorabilia, including many items that were previously housed on the former site of Ebbets Field in the Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame. The Gallery is located on the south side of Surf Avenue at KeySpan Park in Brooklyn, closest to West 19th Street.
