Cyclones Add Defensemen Donny Grover and Steve Makway

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The 2008 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones, announced today that they have agreed to terms with defensemen Donny Grover and Steve Makway. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.

Grover, 25, played in 23 games at the ECHL level a year ago. He saw action in 20 games with Columbia picking up a goal and seven assists there. Donny also played in three games with Reading but did not record a point. He finished the season with Bietigheim-Bissingen of the German Elite League's second division and netted a goal and four assists in 15 games there.

The six-foot-one, 210 pound native of Boston, MA, played collegiately at Northeastern University. The fourth-year pro amassed ten goals and 22 assists and 32 points in 54 games with South Carolina two years ago. In his rookie year (2005-06), he netted ten goals and 31 assists for 41 points in 66 games with Danbury (UHL)-where he was a teammate with Jean-Michel Daoust.

Makway, 25, played with Mississippi (CHL) last season. He tallied eleven goals and 32 assists for 43 points in 64 games with 147 penalty minutes. He ranked eleventh in the league in scoring among defensemen and his +20 was tenth-best among rearguards. Over the last two seasons, Steve has had more than 40 points in the Central Hockey League and 140 penalty minutes each campaign.

The six-foot-five, 230 pound native of Trail, BC, played junior hockey with Battlesfords (SJHL) and was a teammate of former Cyclone Jason Goulet. Battlesfords has also produced former Cyclone Jarred Mohr and current forward Mitch Woods. During 2004-05, Makway began his professional career with Laredo (CHL) and was part of the Presidents Cup championship team with Dov Grumet-Morris. Spending three of his four professional seasons in the CHL, he has participated in 37 fights during that time.

"Donny Grover and Steve Makway are solid two-way ECHL defensemen," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "They both could see time in the AHL this season."

The Cyclones open the season at Wheeling on Friday, October 17 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Dayton on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30pm. There will be a special Kelly Cup championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
