Veteran Mike Bayrack Returns For Another Season In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has signed their first veteran for the upcoming season as forward Mike Bayrack has agreed to terms with the club.

Bayrack, 5-feet-11, 205 pounds played in 39 games for the Checkers last season scoring 17 goals, 20 assists for 37 points placing him fourth in team scoring. He started his 2007-08 campaign in Denmark and Germany before returning to the ECHL where he played the previous two seasons including one with the Checkers in 2005-06. During that year, he finished second in team scoring with 27 goals, 25 assists for 52 points in 62 games. The Edmonton, Alberta native has suited up in 588 professional hockey games since he turned pro during the 1999-00 season.

"The Checkers are a fantastic organization and I am really looking forward to returning. The goal is always the same, to help bring a Kelly Cup to the city and I think we have a great opportunity this year," remarked Bayrack.

"Mike is a tremendous player and we are very happy that he is back in Charlotte for the upcoming season. We hope he can help us achieve our ultimate goal of a championship," said Wilkinson.

The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
