Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Pat Bateman scored a pair of goals less than a minute apart to push the Gwinnett Gladiators to a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Wednesday night. Dirk Southern added a score and an assist for the winners. Former Cyclone Travis Fuller also got in on the act with a score. Gerard Miller's second goal of the season was the only marker for the Cyclones in the contest.

For the fifth time this season, the Cyclones had an opportunity to advance their record to twelve games above .500. For the fifth time Cincinnati came away empty handed. The matchup was the first-ever between the teams and was Cincinnati's ninth against the South Division and had its record drop to 3-6 versus those clubs. Gwinnett improves to 4-2 this year against the North Division.

The first period was a scoreless affair with each team having opportunities. Gwinnett had a pair of power play chances but could not convert. Cincinnati had forward Matt Syroczynski get loose behind the defense for an uncontested shot that was re-directed by Gladiators netminder Joe Fallon. The shots on goal favored Gwinnett, 7-6, in the opening period.

The Cyclones opened the scoring 3:57 into the second period when Gerard Miller let loose with a shot from the left point that eluded Fallon. It was Miller's second goal of the season and the powerplay marked was his first since joining Cincinnati a week ago. Mac Faulkner had the assist on the score. Gwinnett scored the next two. Dirk Southern's goal at 4:42 was his eleventh of the campaign and Pat Bateman's 20th came with 31.3 seconds to go in the middle frame. The Gladiators won the shots battle, 9-7, in the period.

Gwinnett put the game away with Bateman's second goal of the night and 21st of the season with a shot in the slot that eluded Ryan Nie. Almost midway through the frame (9:48), former Cyclone Travis Fuller collected his eighth goal as he came down the left slot, put a couple of fakes on Nie and shot the puck past the Cincinnati netminder. The Cyclones led the shots on goal battle in the third period, 8-5, and for the game the shots were even at 21 apiece.

Despite the defeat, the Cyclones remain tie for first place in the North Division (73 points) with Elmira and Wheeling. Johnstown and Trenton are tied for fourth place (and the final playoff spot in the division) with 72 points each. Dayton remains mathematically alive with 61 points. The top four teams in the North Division will advance to the Kelly Cup playoffs. These six teams each have nine games remaining in the regular season to sort the playoff berths out.

The Cyclones are now 34-24-5 on the season, while Gwinnett is 28-28-6. The Cyclones host the Gladiators again on Thursday night (March 19) at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm.
