New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - First baseman Thomari Story-Harden went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI and catcher Sandy DeLeon went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored to lead the New Haven County Cutters (14-10, 39-30) over the Quebec Capitales (15-10, 31-37) 11-2, Friday night, in the first of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field. The win moves the Cutters to within a half game of the first-place Caps.
RHP Courtney Hall (2-3) carried a shutout into the seventh inning and, overall, allowed two runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings to record the win.
The Cutters turned a 2-0 advantage into a 9-0 blowout by batting around and scoring seven runs in the second inning. The Cutters connected on six hits, including a three-run double by Story-Harden, to put the game out of reach early.
Centerfielder Marcus Nettle's two-run double also contributed to the Cutters' big inning.
Five Cutters' batters posted at least two hits in the contest including D.J. Bailey, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and went 2-for-2 and made a couple of dazzling defensive plays at second base.
Caps' starter LHP Kevin Beavers (2-3) suffered the loss as he allowed 10 runs with only five being earned as the defense made four errors on the night.
Centerfielder Goefrey Tomlinson went 3-for-5 with two doubles for the Caps.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
RHP Justin Knoff (6-4, 3.22 ERA) will start for the Cutters with the Caps sending RHP Brad Purcell (1-4, 5.54 ERA) to the hill.
