Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve extended their season high winning streak to seven games Saturday night with a 6-2 win over the Erie SeaWolves (AA-Detroit Tigers) at Jerry Uht Park in Erie.
The winning streak is now the longest since the Curve's franchise record of 10 wins in a row from 7/24 to 8/2 in 2005. The Curve are now 18-8 in August and, with two more wins to close the month, would conclude the best month in franchise history which currently stands 20-9 in June of 2004.
Pirates' No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez continued his recent offensive fury with another multi-hit night connecting for his 13th Double-A home run of the season. Alvarez now has 27 long balls total after hitting 14 with the Lynchburg Hillcats (A-Advanced) to begin 2009.
The Curve took control of Saturday's game from the very start plating three runs in the top of the first inning with Jason Delaney adding to his team lead in RBIs with a double giving him 63 for the season. Alvarez would then connect for a two-run blast in the fifth inning to extend the Altoona lead to 5-1 and Miles Durham hit his sixth Double-A homer of the season in the sixth inning to conclude Saturday's scoring.
Curve lefty Kyle Bloom (6-8) picked up his sixth win of the season with his longest start of the year lasting 7.0 innings allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five. Bloom is now 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 17 strikeouts in three starts against Erie.
The Curve (60-73) and SeaWolves (67-64) continue their four game series Sunday afternoon. Game time is 1:05 p.m. at Jerry Uht Park. Sunday's probable starters are RHP Tim Alderson (9-1, 3.41) going for his 10th win of the 2009 season for Altoona and RHP Jared Gayhart (1-0, 3.86) for the SeaWolves. Radio coverage for Sunday's ballgame will begin at 12:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network with the Marzoni's In-the-Zone Pre-Game show.
