Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, PA - Altoona scored three late runs in Erie on Friday night but it was too little, too late in a, 6-3, loss to the first-place Erie SeaWolves. Matt Curry and Jarek Cunningham both hit their fourth homers of the season for the Curve, who have now lost four straight games.
Curry provided the Curve with their first two runs of the day when he blasted a two-run homer in the seventh inning. It was Curry's fourth home run of the season and his second this season at Jerry Uht Park. The hit also was the first in the game for the Curve since the second inning when Mel Rojas, Jr. singled.
Altoona threatened to score later in the seventh after starter Patrick Cooper (1-2) walked Andrew Lambo following the Curry homer. He was removed from the game in favor of Blaine Hardy, who induced a fielder's choice out of Cunningham for the inning's first out. Alex Dickerson reached on an error to put two on with one out before Hardy struck out Rojas, Jr. for the second out.
Hardy proceeded to walk Carlos Paulino to load the bases and put the tying run on at first. Gift Ngoepe struck out to end the inning and the threat.
Erie once again widened the lead to four when Luis Sanz was called for a balk in the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on third. Cunningham's homer in the ninth led off the inning and got that run back to once again make it a three-run contest.
The SeaWolves defense then committed two straight errors with one out in the ninth to enable Altoona to have the tying run at the plate with less than two outs. Ngoepe popped to third before Vasquez struck out to end the inning and the game.
Ethan Hollingsworth (0-2) suffered the loss for the Curve after allowing four runs in five innings in his first start of the season. All four runs were scored with two outs. Vasquez had the only multi-hit game in the loss while Adalberto Santos was 1-for-3 to run his on-base streak to 13 games.
Altoona (11-17) and Erie (15-11) mix it up in the second game of the three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night from Jerry Uht Park. To the hill for the Curve goes RHP Stolmy Pimentel (2-0, 0.30), who has the second-best ERA in all of full-season minor league baseball. He'll put his scoreless innings streak on the line versus Erie and its starter RHP Warwick Saupold (1-1, 2.40) on Saturday.
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. For tickets and more information on upcoming promotions and games at Peoples Natural Gas Field, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at the ballpark.
