Portland earns 5-4 walk-off win over New Britain

(Portland, Maine) - Xander Bogaerts appeared to fly out to center field to end the game, but CF Antoan Richardson dropped the shallow pop, scoring two runs, and giving the Portland Sea Dogs (17-9), a 5-4 walk-off win over the New Britain Rock Cats (14-14) on Friday night at Hadlock Field. Portland made it a season-high six straight wins and continues to pace the Eastern League with the best record.
Portland's rally in the ninth started with a one-out walk by Matt Spring. Spring was lifted for pinch-runner Heiker Meneses, who stole second base. Shannon Wilkerson extended the game with a two-out infield hit off losing pitcher Michael Tonkin's (1-1) glove. Bogaerts put the ball in play on a 2-2 count.
Chris Martin (2-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth and extending his scoreless streak to 17.2 IP.
For the second straight day, Bogaerts gave Portland a 1-0 lead, with a solo-homer over the third level of the batter's eye in center.
New Britain grabbed 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning on Curt Smith's two-run homer off the left-centerfield message center. The Rock Cats added two runs in the fifth inning on Josmil Pinto's two-run single off starter Drake Britton (6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO).
Spring cut the deficit to one run, clubbing a two-run homer off Bruce Pugh in the seventh.
Portland is 6-2 against the Rock Cats this season.

The Sea Dogs and the Rock Cats (Twins affiliate) continue their three-game series on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 PM from Hadlock Field.
