Curve Lead Early, Fall Late to Fisher Cats

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Curve were sent to a one-run defeat for a third straight night on Friday in New Hampshire, falling to the Fisher Cats, 3-2, at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Altoona has now lost 11 straight road games and hasn't won on the road since July 24th in Reading.
Altoona carried two different leads on Friday night trying to get a win on the road. The Curve grabbed their first lead in the second when Charlie Cutler scampered home on a throwing error by Fisher Cats right fielder Brad Glenn on a throw back towards the infield.
New Hampshire countered the Curve run with one of its own in the third off starter Tyler Waldron, who rebounded very nicely from a tough start on Tuesday in Portland. Yorvit Torrealba, who was signed by the Blue Jays as a minor league free agent and assigned to New Hampshire, singled off Waldron with one out to bring in Brian Van Kirk and it tied the game at one.
That lone run was the only one Waldron permitted in his five innings of work. The Pilot Hill, Calif. native struck out four, walked two and permitted just four hits before leaving in line for the win.
The Curve's second run scored in the fifth when Jarek Cunningham touched home on Evan Chambers' fielder's choice. That lead lasted until the sixth when the 'Cats were able to get to reliever Kris Harvey (0-3) for a pair of runs (one earned). Ryan Schimpf singled to start the inning and stole second before Ryan Goins came to the plate.
Goins hit a groundball directly behind second base that Cunningham was able to dive and stop to keep it on the infield. Cunningham then popped up and threw low to first to try and get Goins but the throw ended up in Fisher Cats dugout. Schimpf was awarded home and Goins was given second base on the throwing error and the game was tied at two. Van Kirk singled through the left side two batters later to bring Goins in for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Fisher Cats pitching permitted just one Curve hit beyond the fifth, a two-out single by Ramon Cabrera in the eighth. Santos and Stefan Welch each registered multi-hit games in the loss. Tim Alderson pitched very effectively out of the bullpen, striking out two and retiring the side in order in the eighth.
The Curve (59-65) and Fisher Cats (51-74) will meet in the second-game of the three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night. All-Star Brandon Cumpton (11-9, 3.86) strides to the mound in Game 2 for Altoona searching for his 12th win of the season while also looking to be the stopper to the road troubles. Opposing Cumpton on the mound for New Hampshire will be Yohan Pino (7-7, 3.48), who'll be making his second start of the season against the Curve.
