CURVE/AKRON SERIES: The Curve and Aeros will meet for the 18th time this season of their scheduled 24 meetings. The Curve and Aeros are each others' second most common opponent on their respective 2009 schedules. The Aeros have won 12 of 17 this season...Aeros' OF Jared Head has a .405 average (17x42, 1 HR, 10 RBIs) against the Curve this year... C Carlos Santana is hitting .333 (15x45, 3 HR, 9 RBIs)...Curve SS Brian Friday is hitting .364 (12x33) against Akron while UTL Hector Gimenez is swinging the bat at a .346 clip (9x26).
FOR ALTOONA: RHP Yoslan Herrera will make his sixth start (11th appearance) for the Altoona Curve on Sunday night. Herrera is coming off his worst outing of the season (6/2 @ ERI) where he allowed six earned runs on 10 hits...Herrera will make his third appearance (second start) against the Aeros. Herrera has a 7.11 ERA in 6.1 innings vs. Akron this season...Herrera is the only pitcher on the Curve staff with Major League experience, as the Pinar del Rio, Cuba native appeared in five games with Pittsburgh last year, going 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA...Herrera was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent on 12/18/06.
FOR AKRON: LHP Mike Edell will make his seventh appearance (sixth) start of the 2009 season for the Aeros. Edell will face the Curve for the second time this season with his lone Double-A win coming against the Curve on 5/17 at BCB (5.0, 3h, 0r, 5k)...Edell started the season with Columbus (AAA) but faltered, going 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in nine starts. Edell spent the entire 2008 season with the Aeros, compiling a 7-8 record with a 3.80 ERA in 26 starts. The Boston, MA native was selected by Cleveland in the eighth round of the 2005 June Draft from the University of Charleston.
START ME UP: The Altoona Curve have gotten tremendous starting pitching recently. So good, in fact that Curve starters have not given up a run in their last three starts (a span of 20.0 innings)...In eight of Altoona's last 12 outings Curve starting pitchers have enjoyed outings where they have given up two runs or less in those appearances...Half of those outings Curve hurlers have gone 6.0 innings or longer...On May 1, Curve starting pitchers had a combined ERA of 5.33. It currently stands at 3.77.
POWERFUL PEREZ: Since returning from Indianapolis (AAA) on 5/28 Miguel Perez has hit a home run in both games that he has appeared in, including a three run homer in Saturday night's doubleheader.
FADING âPEN: At the end of April the Curve bullpen had been its saving grace tossing 78.2 innings allowing just 24 earned runs in 19 games, sporting an ERA of 2.75. Since then, the âpen has thrown 114.0 innings in their previous 35 games and have allowed 90 earned runs for a 7.10 ERA.
